Considerable care and planning of our potential breeding dogs is taken before they join our breeding program along with extensive planning for the best dam and sire match.
All our breeding parents undertake the following health tests by 12 months of age prior to breeding. If you would like any information on any of our dogs’ health testing results please let us know.
DNA - Breed Profile tested for genetically transmitted diseases & colour traits. We use Orivet Genetic Pet Care in Australia for this.
Hip Dysplasia - X-rays of the hip joints are taken at approximately 12 months of age and scored by an accredited vet to give a hip score for each dog. Hip Dysplasia is an extremely complicated disease that is controlled by many genes as well as environmental factors. A large number of dog breeds are plagued by this problem to varying degrees. The Australian Labradoodle has a very low incident rate of HD, and as a responsible breeder we are striving to ensure that it remains that way.
Elbow Dysplasia - This test is performed at the same time as the Hip Dysplasia. X-rays are taken of the dogs elbow joints and given a score. All our breeding dogs have attained perfect scores of 0. This genetic condition is very rare in Australian Labradoodles
We use the AVA style scoring system in addition to PennHIP. We feel as a responsible breeder this provides us with a detailed assessment of our dogs hips to help us make the best decisions when choosing individual dogs and breeding pairs.
PennHIP - is an additional x-ray which is a multifaceted screening method for hip evaluation. The technique assesses the quality of the canine hip and quantitatively measures canine hip joint laxity and evidence of DJD (Degenerative Joint Disease). The scores are given as percentiles and the median for the Labradoodle is 50th percentile and it is deemed suitable to breed with a dog who scores higher than this and as close to 90th percentile as possible.
These x-rays are more expensive than AVA x-rays and have to be sent to the USA for scoring.
Ophthalmic Examination - checking for cataracts, glaucoma and retinal deterioration. This is completed by a qualified Ophthalmic Veterinary Eye Specialist.
All our puppies have a comprehensive nose to tail health check by our vet at 6 weeks of age along with their first vaccination and microchip. We record this on the puppy’s personal health certificate, checking obvious things like a hernia, heart, jaw and ligament problems etc. If any health concerns arise we ensure this is discussed with the new owner. In your take home pack you will have information about vaccination, worming, de-fleaing etc.
